Biodex System 4 Dynamometer

Biodex System 4 Dynamometer

The Biodex System 4 Dynamometer is a high-tech system that uses magnetic and other forces to provide fluid, flawless range of motion, strength training, and force control/stability training to specific joints. One of its primary functions is use as an isokinetic dynamometer, which means that the machine controls speed of movement, thereby allowing the patient to apply as much force as possible, and also allowing for accurate measurement of force and work production. The Biodex System 4 offers much more than just isokinectics, and includes:

  • Passive range of motion
  • Isokinetic concentric (shortening) and eccentric (controlled lengthening) muscle training at all possible speeds
  • Different speeds of motion translate to muscle function such as strength, power, and endurance, and can be tailored specifically to each patient’s impairments/needs
  • Force control training, which is a form of biofeedback that assists the patient in developing control over muscular force development at a given joint, and is vital in overcoming painful ranges of motion or muscle force production/contraction

Here at SSPT, we utilize the Biodex in a number of ways, with the following being the most common:

  • Knee return to sport testing (strength, power, endurance testing of the quad and hamstring compared to uninvolved knee)
  • Development of quad/hamstring isolated concentric or eccentric strength
  • Development of pain-free ROM with knees, such as patellofemoral (kneecap) pain or arthritis via force control training and strength training through pain-free ranges only
  • Post operative passive ROM
  • Shoulder and knee functional or work capacity testing

(Based on accepted science, backed by independent studies, supported by clinical protocols and normative data.)

Neuromuscular Testing and Rehabilitation-Unusually sensitive to patient’s limits

Isokinetic Resistance Mode: Completely accommodating throughout the entire range of motion

Passive Motion Mode: Multi-function modality

Isometric Mode: Effectively develop strength and decrease joint effusion

Isotonic Mode: Restore Function

Reactive Eccentric Mode: For submaximal neuromuscular re-education in early phases of rehabilitation

Biodex Testing

The BIODEX System 4 Dynamometer is used to measure QUAD and HAMSTRING strength, power, and endurance of the involved knee and compares it to that of the uninvolved knee, yielding a % (of the “good” leg). In order to RETURN TO SPORT, all percentages must be >90%.

Vail Testing: The VAIL TEST objectively evaluates each patient for specific movement-stability criteria (including DKV) on the following movement patterns: (SINGLE LEG SQUATS, LATERAL AGILITY, FORWARDS RUNNING, BACKWARDS RUNNING).

In order to PASS, a patient must achieve a score of 46/54 or >85%.

All or None:

The POWER of this testing program lies in combining the results of the two tests. Strength is nothing without dynamic knee stability!

Each patient is BASELINE TESTED, then tested every 4 weeks after that until passing results are achieved. The timing of the BASELINE test depends upon pathology and/or physician instructions.
